The silent leader — ห-นำ

- Read a word that starts with ห + ม น ย ร ล ว ง ญ and know the ห is silent.
- Give the syllable HIGH class because of the leader, then compute its tone.
- Tell หมา mǎa from มา maa by ear and by eye.
One letter you do not say
You already know ห as a letter with its own sound: หา hǎa, ห้า hâa. Put ห in front of one of the eight sonorants — ม น ย ร ล ว ง ญ — and it goes quiet. The sonorant is the sound you say; ห only lends its HIGH class. So หมา mǎa sounds like maa said with a high-class tone: live syllable, no mark, high class → rising. mǎa.
- หมาม sounds, ห gives high class, live + no mark → rising
- มาno leader: ม is low class, live + no mark → mid
- หน้าleader + ◌้ on a high-class syllable → falling
